The Chinmaya Birth Centenary Celebrations which began on a glorious and colourful note a year ago with the unexpected visit of Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda to the Delhi centre on 7th May 2015, culminated most fittingly with a puja and abhishek at Pujya Gurudev’s pratima.

Conducted by Swami Durgeshananada, Acarya Chinmaya Mission Gurgaon, in the presence of beloved ‘Amma’ Swamini Gurupriyananda, the ceremony was like cool shower of grace and blessings. The fragrance of the flowers, the chanting of Vedic mantras and the Shri Chinmaya Ashtottarshata Namavalli filled the atmosphere with divine vibrations.

Bedecked in new saffron robes and fragrant garlands, Pujya Gurudev looked serene and resplendent. The entire experience filled the hearts of the gathered devotees with devotion for their Beloved Master.

Zoe Collington, a young devotee who had been nestled in Pujya Gurudev’s lap as a young child, expressed her devotion for Pujya Gurudev by exhibiting a series of paintings-cum-photographs (in mixed media) featuring Gurudev.

The morning concluded with a breakfast bhandara. The Centenary Celebrations are coming to a close, but devotees and disciples of Pujya Gurudev have certainly been infused with renewed enthusiasm to further expand Gurudev’s vision and continue reaching out to more and more people all over the world.
UNTO HIM OUR BEST

“Guru Brahma Gurur Vishnu Guru Devo Maheshwaraha
Guru Saakshat Para BrahmaTasmai Sree Gurave Namaha”

The true meaning of the sloka was rendered in the form of a centenary birthday  celebration for Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda in the campus of “School Of Inspired Leadership in collaboration with chinmaya mission, Gurgaon on 8th of May. The a function started with “Guru Paduka Pujan” at around 5:30 PM with the chanting of  Shanti Mantra “Om Sahana Vavatu..” followed by chanting of various stotras and slokas by devotees and Balavihar student of the Chinmaya Mission. Later “Gurudev Arti” was chanted with offering of flowers. From the newly baptized ‘Self-Starters’ batch of 2017, there was a devotional performance in the praise of Swami Chinmayananda which mesmerized the entire audience.

The flamboyant leader, Anil Sachdev shared his nostalgic childhood memories which he shared with his family concerning Gurudev. He also narrated a few stories from his childhood, be it how his family followed the teachings of Swami Chinmayananda or the miracles that he saw with his own eyes depicted by Gurudev.

At around 6:30 P.M, ‘On a Quest’ – a biopic on the journey of Swami Chinmayananda from Sceptic to Sannyasi was screened. The movie gave an insight reflection of Swami Chinmayananda journey of life. A contemptuous atheist, fiery revolutionary, skeptical academician, interrogative journalist, a spiritual seeker with an ardent quest for truth, a visionary reaching out to the world with his inspired teachings. This was a story of an ordinary man and his many facets – a transformation that is too spectacular to be true. This inspirational movie was highly admired by everyone.

As mentioned earlier, the current batch of 2017 was named by the Teacher himself Anil  Sachdev with the aspiration and motivation that he saw in the current batch, as “Self Starters”. Lastly ‘Prasad’ was distributed to all the devotes and visitors thereby concluding the auspicious occasion of celebrating the 100 th birthday of Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda.

Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, Powai, 8 th May, 2016, the 100 th Jayanti of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda – the air reverberated with the chants of Om Shri Chinmaya Sadgurave Namaha as oon as everyone entered the Ashram. It was 7.30 am and there were people milling around the registration counter to register for their Abhishek timing slots. Everyone looked so very happy and at peace standing in the queues.

The inauguration started at 8.30 a.m. with Br. Ved Chaitanya giving the opening address followed by Shri. Mukulbhai Patel who gave the welcome address. Swami Bodhatmananda spoke to the gathering about how Gurudev brought the highest knowledge down to us, “Arjunas”. As against many teachers who hold back some knowledge, Gurudev shared it all with us irrespective of caste, creed or gender.

Pujya Gurudev, he said, wanted to make many more “Chinmayas”. Swami Swatmanandaji then addressed the gathering and elaborated on the first verse of Kritajnata – Samasta-Jana -Kalyane and spoke about Gurudev and his ideals, his compassion, his zeal while working for the people and the country and how he was firmly established in the Truth.

Swami Bodhatmananda released 2 new publications entitled “Read Daily, Live Fully” which are excerpts from Gurudev’s writings and “The Life of I” the next in the Mananam Series. A Marathi DVD entitled “Pathirakha Sadguru” by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayanandaji was also released.

All present then chanted the Guru Stotram, Gurudev’s Ashtottarashata Namavali followed by Gurudev’s Aarti. The Sahasra-Kalashaabhishek (Abhishek with 1000 Kalash-s) began with the Acharyas performing the Abhishek on Gurudev’s Vigraha first, then the Mukhya Yajmans followed by the other Kalash Yajmans.

While the Abhishek was being performed, the Sadhana Mela was in full swing. The Sadhana Mela was based on the eight aspects of Saguna Sadhana of Pujya Gurudev (Naam, Rupa, Guna, Kriya, Sambandh, Leela, Dhaam & Swarupa) with special counters/events for children as well as elders. Members were seen leaving the Geeta Mandir with smiles of serenity on their faces after participating in the guided meditation session in Pujya Gurudev’s voice, while children were kept occupied with parables and stories under the trees like in the Vedic time. Books, Cds, DVDs and other merchandise were fast going off the stands with Chinmaya Vani, Upahar and other stalls. There were selfies being clicked with a cutout of Pujya Gurudev, which was a big hit. Pujya Gurudev’s quotes were jumbled and one had to get the right quote. Even Swami Bodhatmananda was seen putting a quote together. Devotees who had met and interacted with Pujya Gurudev regaled members with their anecdotes. There were devotees who hadn’t met Pujya Gurudev and they recalled the impact He had on them. Children and youth were seen drawing/sketching portraits of Pujya Gurudev.

The Ashram was packed with members – old and new, devotees – old and new. The atmosphere was charged with inspiration and vibrant dynamism. Volunteers, led by Br. Ved Chaitanya, who had been working tirelessly for this day, ensured a seamless and smooth movement for all the members from the Vigraha Abhishek through all the sadhanas.

The program concluded with the screening of ‘On-A- Quest”.  A day filled with Sadhana on this Sadhana Day. A Day for introspection and reflection. A Day of feeling blessed. A Day filled with gratitude for Pujya Gurudev.

Pujya Gurudev’s Jayanti was celebrated on 8th May 2016 on this centenary in a true yagna spirit. Preparations began for this day about two weeks, immediately after Hanuman Jayanti. The Chinmaya Mission family sevaks and devotees were allocated different duties and roles to fulfill for the celebrations of the Pujya Gurudev’s jayanti. It was evident that there was much enthusiasm from all the devotees to ensure that the Pujya Gurudev’s Jayanti celebrations be enlivening and stimulating. No doubt everyone’s vision for the mission became more energized.

When the day came, even the weather favored the occasion by not raining as it had been for the past few days. The Chinmaya family members, all dressed appropriately in traditional and cultural attire, gathered at the Chinmaya Center of Learning to celebrate Pujya Gurudev’s centenary birthday. Greetings were being exchanged and one could feel the excitement that the occasion had brought. It was as if Pujya Gurudev was actually present at his jayanti celebrations. Pujya Gurudev was already seated at the altar and garlanded with a beautiful red and white garland, for the fervent celebrations.

The program included Paduka Puja, bhajans including Gurudev Jayanti song, video presentations on Pujya Gurudev’s work, cake cutting ceremony and testimonials of how devotees have been inspired by Pujya Gurudev.

Devotees started to find their place at the appropriate Paduka Puja thalis (trays). Each thali had a Paduka set that was to be gifted to each devotee so that the devotees can perform Paduka Pujas at home on a regular basis.

The function began with lighting of the auspicious divyas. The blessings and grace of the almighty was sought through the mudras and chants. Having purified the environment and atmosphere, the padukas were washed in the customary manner with devotion as if Pujya Gurudev was about to wear them. Then followed the offering of the panchamrut, incense and divya lamps.

Hymns from Shree Gurustotram, Guru Paduka stotram and Guru ashtakam were chanted by all devotees creating an environment where even the Deities would feel welcomed. Recalling the meanings of the hymns, it felt that Pujya Gurudev is a most extraordinary icon and that He is all about goodness and Godliness. All devotees recited the chants in harmony and with full devotion.

Having convinced the mind that we are indeed blessed to be somehow associated with Pujya Gurudev, the devotees began to sing the Sri Chinmaya Ashtottaranaamaavali, the 108 names of Pujya Gurudev that were chanted with such dedication and love. Each name unfolds the greatness that Pujya Gurudev Chinmayananda represents and became and how every sincere devotee can strive to become too! Pujya Gurudev did say that he awaits the arrival of devotees at the gates of Moksha. As hands flowed from the heart to the Paduka with each chant of the great names, it was as if devotees were also being uplifted into another sphere of true bhakti and total admiration for true greatness. What a majestically magnanimous and honorable Pujya Gurudev do we have!

Having honored Pujya Gurudev and appreciated all that he has done for all the devotees, illumined the path to live our lives and enlightened the Truth for us, the Paduka Puja concluded with the Sri Chinmaya Aarti.

This was followed by bhajans that elevated devotees to a realm of devoutness and sanctified the Chinmaya Center of learning. Thereafter, videos on Pujya Gurudev’s life, ‘Tribute to Gurudev’ and the ‘Chinmaya Pradeep’ were screened to broaden the devotees knowledge on Pujya Gurudev’s and Chinmaya Mission’s work. The photos of Pujya Gurudev of the earlier days when Chinmaya Mission began, were enthralling and absolutely inspiring – as if His very presence was there and he would emerge from the video and begin delivering his enchanting discourse.

The special two Chinmaya Jayanti songs composed by Guruji Tejomayananda were sung by the devotees. While the songs were being sung the excited baalavihar children joyfully cut the cake in honor of Gurudeva followed by the recitation of the Chinmaya Family pledge led by the Yuvakendra.

In an informal session, several devotees began narrating their experiences with Pujya Gurudev, others described how they were inspired to join the Mission and their experiences of ‘walking the path’ and some narrated how their special prayers to Gurudeva have been answered in trying and difficult times with extraordinary happenings.
No doubt Pujya Gurudev created opportunity and chances for many – no doubt this was the grace of Pujya Gurudev and the Lord, but we salute such devotees who enliven Pujya Gurudev. As devotees expressed their love for Pujya Gurudev, words flowed from the heart and tears flowed as nectar further sanctifying the Padukas. Today, Pujya Gurudev’s presence cannot be avoided by all the doings – His presence has been felt as He has touched each heart of every devotee. This can only be the divinity at work that Pujya Gurudeva kept talking of. We have experienced that divinity on Gurudeva’s Jayanti.

Being the centenary birth celebration of Pujya Gurudeva Chinmayananda, this was a very special occasion…….nay an extraordinary celebration, to express the devotees homage to Pujya Gurudev. In this regard the Paduka Puja is perhaps the best traditional and cultural manner to express one’s devotion and commitment to the philosophies and principles prescribed by Gurudeva. There would be no better gift to Pujya Gurudev on his centenary birthday, then to pledge to follow the ideology and tenets of the scriptures as elaborated upon by Pujya Gurudev throughout his life.

To a devotee worshiping the Guru’s paduka represents the humble surrender, steadfast faith and devout reverence that the devotee has for the highest knowledge and wisdom, transmitted by the Lord, through the Guru. Such love and devotion of the Paduka, illustrates the praise and honor for the Guru, and demonstrates the grace of God that inspired and galvanized the student, to become a disciple of not only the Guru, but also of the Supreme Truth which is Brahman (Supreme Entity).

Thus, for a true devotee, the Paduka are sacred. They are looked upon with endearment and adornment, expressing deep gratitude for illuminating the spiritual path and enlightenment of the Truth, by the Guru and thereby reordering the disciple’s vision and abilities along the path of righteousness and goodness that the Guru also walked, with his Paduka.

In conclusion therefore, on Pujya Gurudev’s 100th Jayanti, we remember not just Gurudev, but even more so, the ideals and principles that he was faithfully committed to, the sacrifices that he underwent selflessly to safeguard the worldly and spiritual welfare of others, through which he inspired so many devotees that gained in principles and godliness; that we too commit ourselves to achieving that divine nature whereby our egos and self identifications become cinders in the fire of sacrifice and illumination of the Supreme Truth.

The following is a quick report about Gurudev’s Birth centenary celebrations held at Chinmaya Mission Boston.
1A
What a day of celebration May 8th 2016 has been as we revel in our memories and teachings of Gurudev! Four centers of Chinmaya Mission Boston chapter came together bright and early at 8:00am this morning to start the celebration with Guru Paduka Puja to our dear Gurudev. More than 200 people gathered in the Mandir where the vibrations could be felt as the entire congregation chanted and sang with fervor. Throughout the day students and teachers of Balavihar performed several songs, dances, stotrams and skits all of which were connected to Gurudev: whether it was a dance to “Salangai katti Odi Odi Va”, one of Gurudev’s favorite songs, or chanting of the Ganga Stuti or a session where senior members of Chinmaya Mission Boston reminisced about their personal encounters with Gurudev, or a skit about a US Presidential debate, where Gurudev happened to be one of the candidates, or yet another skit where we saw flashbacks into Gurudev’s life as a questioning child and heard the significance of the proportion of the three Gunas through the famous coffee, milk & sugar example!
1C
At the height of the day-long celebration over 700 people were in attendance. With true yagna spirit, the culinary experts amongst our members made and served fresh, delicious masala dosas and sizzling hot puris to everyone present!
1H
We were fortunate to have Swami Tyaganandaji of Ramakrishna Vedanta Society, Boston as our Guest of honor. In his address to the audience, he spoke about what a profound and inspiring teacher Gurudev was, and how Gurudev would be happiest if we, as Chinmaya Mission members, applied his teachings in our daily lives.

The Grace of the Master!

The day before the commemoration of the centenary of Swami Chinmayananda, on the occasion of the first public screening of the movie “On a Quest” in Reunion Island, we experienced a great moment in the history of our Chinmaya Mission Reunion. Despite a low media coverage of our promotion of the event, the first screening was a great success and it was also an opportunity to remember that our approach is not intended only for a specifici community, a religion or a strata of the society.

Projection du film

That afternoon of May 7, 2016, reflecting the diversity of our beautiful country (Reunion island), the audience was rather colorful and all the colors of the various communities that make up our beautiful nation were represented. Despite this diversity of socio-ethno-cultural backgrounds and spiritual beliefs, there was at the end of the film a wonderful unity in the appreciation of this universal beauty that shines through the life of a Master. The universality of His message and the authenticity of His quest did not fail to touch the heart of all those who have taken the trouble of coming there. The spark that we could see in the eyes of all those present at the end of the movie was a clear indication that the grace of the master leaves its infallible mark on all those who come in contact with Him, albeit through such an indirect way as watching a film.

Sortie de film 2

Pujya Swami Pranavananda ji told me repeatedly that Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda was like a magnet that attracted the public towards him wherever he went. We had the grace to observe the truth of his statements during this first screening of On a Quest.Paduka Pooja

In fact, although His Grace is sometimes more clearly evident than at other times, wisdom will make us understand that the grace of the master is ever with us, because the Truth tha He reveals and that is reflected in his entire life, is nothing other than the beauty and happiness of our own true Self. And it is only to guide us to our own divinity, by prompting us to begin our quest towards the Reality, that the master, whatever his name and whatever his form, always appears, sooner or later, in our lives.

Hari Om Tat Sat!
